Day 5 - EUCYS 2011
Today is the last day of the fair. Everyone was treated to a nice sleep-in this morning after yesterday’s exciting events. My two chaperones and I ate breakfast at our regular time and then headed out to the market to buy some homemade souvenirs that we could bring back to Canada. At 10:30 am, all contestants and their chaperones met outside of the hotel and we headed, by metro, to the awards ceremony.
The awards ceremony took place at the Great Hall in the University of Helsinki. The ceremony started and ended with an arrangement of songs played by a group of musicians in Finland. Axl Smith was the host for this event again. The main prizes at EUCYS went to Ireland, Switzerland, and Lithuania.
After the awards ceremony concluded, time was given to take pictures with the beautiful buildings in that area of Helsinki. It was a lovely sunny day outside, which made the last day of the fair all that much better. We were then all transported back to the exhibition hall for the last time that week. Public had access to the building at this time and were free to look at all the projects. This was also a time for contestants to have a look at other projects outside of their area in the exhibition hall. After the public viewing was over, we were free to take down our projects. The project take-down went a little faster than I expected, giving us free time in the exhibition hall before the busses would return. A group of contestants had turned their posters and other’s posters into airplanes had a paper airplane contest after taking down their boards.
Buses then transported all the contestants and their chaperones back to the hotel so that people could prepare for the farewell party that evening. The farewell party was held at the Museum of Technology. Dinner was served in parts and it consisted of salmon soup, lamb, and white chocolate mousse. After the dinner part of the farewell party was over, the student helpers put on a presentation about their week at EUCYS and they also gave out additional prizes to certain people who made the fair even more interesting. The awards that they gave out were the Batman and Robin Award, The Three Musketeer award, and the Magical Mystery award. Following these awards, we were honoured to listen to a presentation by beatboxer Felix Zenger. This was the followed by a dance that ended at around 12:30pm. Most contestants stayed right until the end of the dance and then we all said our goodbyes and headed back to the hotel to get some rest for the long journey home.
This week in Finland has been such a wonderful week and one of the best experiences of my life. I sure am going to miss EUCYS and am very thankful to have been part of this amazing event.
